All or Nothing

Democracy was invented to abolish tyranny.

Respond to the statement

that social dynamics tend in the direction of tyranny wherever democracy is absent, weak or falls short in its reach.

The battle for democracy is for all or nothing — a zero sum game with only one winner: democracy or tyranny. In physical terms, we could think of democracy as the stable state of a society and tyranny as its ground state. They are not the same in this case. Maintaining stability requires constant effort but yields prosperity in return, whereas tyranny also requires constant effort to maintain because it benefits only those in control and angers everyone else.

  1. The Seven Samurai in Corporate America
In times of growth, peril or uncertainty, those who can, do and those who benefit shower them with accolades. In times of decline, retrenchment or stagnation, those who can’t, bully and trample underfoot those who can while those who benefit turn a blind eye. Democracy was invented to eliminate this harmonic from the cycles of history. Its implementation must be accordingly pervasive, strong and unrelenting in order to effectively manifest its intended results.
